Cat spaying/neutering

cat-spaying.jpg Four of my tomcats were neutered last week. They are fine now, as a matter of fact, they are already playing with the other cats as if nothing happened. Thats why I don’t really worry about my tom cats when its time to visit the vet to have them neutered. What I worry about is when its time for my female cats to be spayed. You see i had a cat who died while being operated on. It is very traumatic on my part. They say that spaying is considered safe unless a cat has a health problem. So I really prepare my cat weeks before their scheduled operation. I give them extra food for extra strength. I give them vitamins everyday. I also deworm them. Tomorrow, 4 of my female cats will be spayed. I pray to God to protect them and keep them safe from harm. Continue Reading »

How To Give a Cat a pill

images.jpg

I got this one from our CATSLAIR  yahoo group forum. I hope you’ll like it. I find it very funny and soooo true :)

How To Give A Cat A Pill

1. Pick up cat and cradle it in the crook of your left arm as if holding a baby. Position right forefinger and thumb on either side of cat’s mouth and gently apply pressure to cheeks while holding pill in right hand. As cat opens mouth, pop pill into mouth. Allow cat to close mouth & swallow.

2. Retrieve pill from floor & cat from behind sofa. Cradle cat in left
arm & repeat process.

3. Retrieve cat from bedroom, and throw soggy pill away.

4. Take new pill from foil wrap, cradle cat in left arm, holding rear
paws tightly with left hand. Force jaws open and push pill to back of mouth with right forefinger. Hold mouth shut for a count of ten. Continue Reading »

Herpes viral conjunctivitis

cat-with-elizabethan-collar.jpg Herpes viral conjunctivitis has been a common problem in our shelter. Since most of the newly rescued cats are weak and malnourished, they are prone to all kinds of sickness. I have cats who are now half blind due to this sickness. And everytime it strikes on any of the kittens, I do everything to prevent the disease from destroying their eyes and ending up being blind. I have failed so many times. All the ointments that the vets have prescribed have failed, even the most expensive one. So i vowed to master the treatment of HVC. I did some research on the net and somehow connected them all together. Finally, I was able to find the solution. No, I did not discover the cure, But i found the way to contain it and prevent further damage. Continue Reading »

Deworming cats

I am about to deworm the cats in the shelter (65 all in all). And its not easy i tell you. What i usually do, instead of wrestling with the cats forcing them to take the deworming medicine through a syringe, i grind the powder and mix them in a little amount of their most favorite food. I give them the medicine just before their 2nd meal for the day. By that time, they are so hungry that they would just immediately swallow the piece of food mixed with their medicine in one gulp. My cat with a swollen left cheek..

neneng.jpgI have 65 cats now in the shelter and I think I have experienced a lot of medical cases with some of them. Some are fatal but some can be remedied. Just last week, I noticed that one of my female adult cats have a swollen left cheek. It is a standard operating system in the shelter to put the cat in the isolation area for observation. She was eating, no problem with that. She was active. Its just the swell in her left cheek continues to grow bigger. I am no veterinarian, but believe me, here in the philippines, most of the vets here have little knowledge when it comes to treating cats. I have a cat who instead of getting well after visiting the vet, died of antibiotic overdose. The stories are endless but ill discuss them in my next post. Going back to “neneng”, I gave her 1ml of antibiotics(250 mg) 3 x a day for 1 week. After 2 days, her cheek is still swollen but I released her from the isolation room since her caretaker pities her and could no longer bear to hear her meowing. I approved the release since she seems to be fine. on the 3rd day, the swelling starts to subside (see, the antibiotic did work and I was right). On the 5th day, the swelling is gone. but I had to give her antibiotics until the 7nth day.

We also have cats with swollen paws, I just follow the exact procedure i mentioned above, and the swelling subsides.

When you have a shelter with no funding to spare, you will be forced to rely on your experiences and to do some research on your own for some of the cats’ medical needs. We cannot afford to take them to the vet (Unless of course if the cat is seriously sick).
