Before I was a cat mom

Got this lovely poem on the Catslair Yahoo Group Forum.

Before I Was a Cat Mom
I made and ate hot meals unmolested.
I had unstained, unfired clothes.
I had quiet conversations on the phone,
even if the doorbell rang.

Olympics clean-up Chinese style: Inside Beijings shocking death camp for cats

I have read this article on the Daily Mail about a shocking move being done by beijing to their animals just to clean up their streets in preparation for the upcoming Olympic Games.

Thousands of pet cats in Beijing are being abandoned by their owners and sent to die in secretive government pounds as China mounts an aggressive drive to clean up the capital in preparation for the Olympic Games.

Hundreds of cats a day are being rounded and crammed into cages so small they cannot even turn around.

Then they are trucked to what animal welfare groups describe as death camps on the edges of the city.

The cull comes in the wake of a government campaign warning of the diseases cats carry and ordering residents to help clear the streets of them.

Dasmarinas Kitten Massacre

I chanced upon this post in the Animal Welfare Coalition (AWC) forum about the Dasmarinas Kitten massacre posted by Nancy Cu Unjieng a couple of months ago. The massacre took place in a temporary shelter, situated in one of the exclusive subdivisions in Manila and is being managed by Compassion and Responsibility for Animals (CARA) headed by Nancy Cu Unjieng.

A kitten named Sola…

image590.jpgimage595.jpg

We went to an exclusive subdivision just this evening to bring my 3 year old nephew home. As we were about to leave the driveway, I heard (again) this familiar sound. The sound may seem too faint for others to hear but not for me. I was gifted (cursed perhaps) with a great sense of hearing that I can hear even the faintest cry of an abandoned kitten… even on a stormy night! So, I became restless and my eyes immediately scanned the darkly lit street of the village to search for the sound. And there I saw a vision of a small black kitten.

My eyesight sometimes amazes me. You see, I am nearsighted but I can see a tiny, black kitten who’s about 30 meters away from me, in the dark, and yet i cannot see my husband waving at me a few meters away at the shopping mall. Continue Reading »

Cats that refuse to eat …

macky-1.jpg

MY MACKY GIRL

When you have 65 cats, you have to device ways on how to monitor the behavior of each and every one of them, including their eating habits.

Thats why we have small cages in the shelter wherein we put the cats in (one cat per cage) during mealtime. We place them inside their cages while we prepare their meals (which consists of fish and rice). Then we give their food bowl to them one by one. We will wait thirty minutes for them to finish their meal. Then we start to monitor each cat.

When we see a cat that’s still restless and seems to want more food, we add some to his bowl. When we see a cat that hasn’t touched his food, we try and give them the canned sardines (that they all love soooooo much- reserved only for the sick cats because its quite expensive) just to check if he takes a bite (Yes some cats are quite choosy. When they dont like whats being served, they don’t eat at all). Continue Reading »
